Introduction to Research

These pages contain information to help get you started on your research project. The following is an overview of the library resources and tools to assist you. 

  • Primo OneSearch - The platform to search holdings at UMES (i.e. the Catalog), the USMAI consortium and libraries worldwide while simultaneously searching about 50 library databases
  • A-Z Databases - A searchable list of all of the library's databases
  • Journal Search - A searchable list of all the library's online and print journals by title or subject category
  • Interlibrary Loan - To request articles, chapters and books

Primo OneSearch

Primo OneSearch is a good place to start your research when you want to find peer-reviewed journals, magazines, ebooks and other resources on your topic at one time. It is a platform that allows you to search all UMES and USMAI consortium physical holdings and about 50 UMES databases simultaneously.

Example of a keyword search:

Refine my Results: Filter results for books, full text articles, etc.

  • Availability: All articles are full text (unless you select Expand My Results); click Peer-reviewed Journals for scholarly articles
  • UMES Library: Click to view books at UMES
  • Publication Data: Enter a date range for recently published articles (click Refine to apply the filter)

Click the title link for the full record with options to:

  • Copy the citation or export it to RefWorks, copy the permalink, etc.
  • Scroll to View Online to link to the full text article

Google Scholar

If you prefer using Google Scholar to search for articles, be sure to change the configuration to link with UMES subscriptions (both on and off campus):

  1. Under the “triple bar” menu at top left, click Settings > Library Links
  2. Check University of Maryland Eastern Shore and uncheck all other options
  3. Click Save

4. Search results will now show library databases under Find it @ UMES
